This is an easy tutorial to disable the Charms bar hint as well disable the Recent Apps bar in Windows 8.
If you are using Windows 8, you must be aware about the hot corners (which can be disabled). When you move your mouse to top right corner of the screen, the Windows 8 Charm Bar Hint appears. It gives quick access to the 5 system components: Search, Share, Start, Devices, and Setting. Similarly when you move the mouse to the top left corner of the screen, the Recent Apps bar will appear, which will give you a quick access to the launched modern apps.
Windows 8 has added this feature to let the users quickly access the recent apps and system components. But every time we move our mouse to the corner of the Windows 8 screen, the Hint bar appears, which is quite annoying. Many times, we accidentally move our mouse to the corner or we move our cursor to close any application/software then also the hint appears.
I have divided the tutorial two parts. The first part of the tutorial lets you disable the hint bars so that when you will move your cursor to the top corner, the hint bar will not appear until you move your mouse downwards.
The second part of the tutorial lets you disable the hints bar in such a way that, when you move the mouse to the top corners of the screen and even move the mouse downwards, the hint bar will not appear. But when you move the cursors on the bottom corners, only then the hint bar will appear.
Disable Charm Bar And Recent Apps Bar In Windows 8:
In this part of the tutorial, you will be able to disable the hint bar so that when you move mouse to the top corners, the hint bars will not appear until you move the mouse downward. To do so, follow the instructions mentioned below:
Step 1: The very first thing that you need to do is open “Run”. To open run, press “Windows key + R”. In the run box, type regedit
and click on OK.
Step 2: Registry Editor will open in a new window. In Registry Editor, navigate to the “ImmersiveShell” by using the below mentioned path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell
Step3: In ImmersiveShell, create a new key. To create a key, right click on the ImmersiveShell and navigate to New -> Key. Name the key as “EdgeUI
” (without inverted commas).
Step 4: In the EdgeUI key, create two DWORD: DisableTLCorner and DisableTRCorner.
- DisableTLCorner lets you disable recent apps bar hint so that when you move your mouse to the right corner, the recent apps will not appear until you move the mouse downwards.
- DisableTRCorner lets you disable charm bar hint so that when you move your mouse to the right corner, the recent apps will not appear until you move the mouse downwards.
To create the DWORD, right click on the central panel of EdgeUI key, and then navigate New -> DWORD. Create the above mentioned DWORDs and set their value as 1.
Instead of creating the separate two DWORD, you can create single DWORD named “DisableCharmsHint”. It will let you disable both the bar hints. It even disables the bottom bar hint i.e. when you will move the mouse to the bottom, the Hint bar will not appear until you move the mouse upwards. To activate the DWORD, set the value as 1.
Now test the changes you have made. The changes will be applied instantly, you don’t need to restart your PC.
Disable The Charm Bar And Recent Apps Bar Hint Using Navigation Properties:
In this part of the tutorial, you will be able to disable the hint bar, so that when you will point to the upper right or upper left corner, the hint bar will not appear even when you move the mouse downward. However, when you point to the bottom of the screen, the hint bar will appear. To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Go to the Windows 8 Desktop, and right click on the Taskbar. From the list, click on “Properties”.
Step 2: Taskbar and Navigation Properties window will appear. Click on the “Navigation” tab. You will get two Navigation setting options: Corner navigation and Start Screen.
Step 3: In corner navigation, you will see 3 checklists. Uncheck the two checlists that say “when I point to the upper-right corner, show the charms” and “when I point to the upper-left corner, switch between my recent apps”.
Apply the changes and save it.
Now, point to the corners of the screen to check that changes have been applied.
