This is a quick tutorial to explain how to disable Copilot in Windows 11 using Registry. For some reasons, if you are not liking the new Copilot in Windows 11 then you can disable it. There is no direct option to do that in Windows settings, but you can use a Registry hack to do it and I will explain how. After disabling Copilot, it will no longer appear in the Taskbar and will not work from the keyboard shortcut as well.
Microsoft has now given access to the Copilot to many users in the Insider Program. It is good but it is not really useful as the same thing is now built-in Microsoft Edge. Since it is using the same Bing AI Chat as in Edge Sidebar, so, Edge users do not really need it. In that case, it is wise to just turn it off. And here I will show you how to do that.
How to Disable Copilot in Windows 11 using Registry?
So, good thing is you don’t need a third-party software tool to do this. Just open Run and then type “regedit” in it to launch the Windows Registry Editor.
Once the Registry opens, go this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Right click in empty area and create a new 32-bit DWORD and name it “ShowCopilotButton”. For reference, see the screenshot below.
Set the value of this newly created DWORD AS 0. Save the changes and you are done. Although by default the value is 0 but in case you are getting some other value then make sure to set it to zero.
Once the value has been saved, you will notice that the Copilot icon is gone from the Taskbar. At this point, you have successfully disabled the Windows Copilot.
In this way, you can now easily turn off Copilot in Windows 11. Just a few steps you have to take in order to do this. Also, if later in future you want Copilot back then process is exactly the same except for the last step. Instead of 0, you just have to use 1 as the DWORD value to get the Copilot icon back in Taskbar.
