The app runs in background and requires your credentials. You can then easily let it do its work. On the main screen, you can see overview of your current connection and tweak other settings. It shows you stars of the OpenDNS services and if that is enabled on your phone. The app also enables OpenDNS service on your phone to block inappropriate and malicious sites.
OpenDNS is a popular DNS is freemium which is used by a lot of organizations and individuals. The OpenDNS is fast and it filters your queries. It can easily block requests to spammy, malicious, porn, phishing, and rummy sites and keep your home or office network safe. You can even configure it on your home to keep your kids away from such sites. But in order to work, it needs your public IP address and that needs to be updated. For Windows and MAC, it provides official clients to auto update IP but not for Android and iOS. And in this post, I will talk about a third-party app to update IP to OpenDNS account.
How to Update IP in OpenDNS Account from Android?
OpenDNS Updater is a free and tiny app that you can use on your phone. Once, you activate it, it will keep watching the IP changes and after detecting the change, it will update that in your account. You just need to provide your credentials in this and then it will take care of the rest. Download and install this app from Play Store and then log in with your credential. After that, you will reach the main interface and updater is disabled by default.
Now, you just turn on the switches “Enable auto updater” and then let it watch IP changes. This app comes with a built-in OpenDNS server to run on your phone as well, but that is not guaranteed to work. But in my phone, it was working fine. After you turn it on, it will start functioning properly. You can see this app in action in the following screenshots.
Tap on the gear icon in the app and then you can simply adjust some inner app settings there. You can start filtering on your phone by tapping the “Use blacklist” option. There are other some settings that you can enable or disable. The IP updater show its stats on the main screen.
In this way, you can use this simple Android app to easily configure OpenDNS app. However, do note that the app is primarily intended to update IP which it does perfectly. But sometimes the OpenVPN server fails to start the filtering can can’t enable phishing sites filter. The app is open source and maybe in the later updates there will be no such problems.
